Understanding Personal Finance

Personal finance involves managing risk at a personal level. This includes avoiding racking up debt, building an emergency fund, saving for larger future expenses, and insuring any higher cost, higher risk areas like healthcare, long term care, personal liability, homeowners, and automobiles. We recommend starting with the basics — creating a plan, setting a budget, and building up an emergency fund. Once you have the managing risk part covered, you can tackle the next part of personal finance – building wealth.

Did You Know? Only 18% of Americans say they could live off their emergency savings for six months, according to a Bankrate survey.

So, if you feel like you don’t have enough saved up, you’re not alone. Kansas Money Coach can help you get your finances on track.

Also, if you’ve saved up a bit, but need help taking your financial portfolio to the next level, we’re also here to help you get more advanced financially.

Securing Your Family’s Financial Future

It’s also crucial that you create a plan in case something happens to you so that your family is taken care of, which is why we help clients plan for their legacy and document their plan. While it’s not a fun topic, it’s an important one so we work to guide our clients through the process to ensure they’re family is protected.

This includes outlining, organizing, and securely saving:

  • Healthcare information and wishes
  • Funeral instructions
  • Estate planning documents
  • Income tax documents
  • Identification documents
  • Security information
  • Asset ownership details
  • Debts owed
  • Insurance policies

Tools to Get Started with a Financial Coach

There are some apps you can use to get started working with a financial coach and getting a snapshot of your spending and finances. Some include:

  • Mint: Kansas Money Coach has personally used this product and it’s a great online option that’s free. It also has some premium features you can use if you want to dive a bit deeper into your finances.
  • QuickBooks Online (QBO): We also recommend this option for small business owners, entrepreneurs, freelancers, and consultants for tracking income, expenses, mileage, invoicing, and more. There is a cost to this product, but it’s low and the features are worth it for managing finances (as well as pulling information when it’s time to file taxes). Sometimes QuickBooks runs promotions, so you can get access to this tool for as little as $12/month. They also offer a free trial so you can test it out.
  • YNAB: YNAB – You Need a Budget – is another one we hear personal finance experts saying great things about. It’s a paid subscription, but they have a free trial for 34 days so you can test it to see if it’s worth it for you. (If it helps you keep an eye on your money, it is likely worth it!) You can get access to it for $84/year.
